PSE's IT Infrastructure team is looking for qualified candidates to fill an open Sr Network Engineer position!

Job Description

  • Provides the planning, design, acquisition and implementation of the company’s network services. Evaluates business requirements to develop and implement solutions. Conducts project planning, cost analysis and vendor comparisons. Performs traffic study analysis to determine best configuration of systems.
  • Manages infrastructure related to networks including related hardware and software to ensure availability, recoverability, performance, integrity and supportability through production support and maintenance of existing network, and development and implementation of network enhancements.
  • Administers, monitors, troubleshoots, configures, enhances and provides advanced customer support for the existing network system.
  • Plans and executes network designs, configurations, or enhancements to existing network services.
  • Researches, recommends and designs new technologies, new configurations and enhancements to existing networks, providing consulting advice to customers on the capabilities of the network environment.
  • Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

Job Responsibilities

  • Designs networking and voice infrastructure and interfaces to external networks.
    • Participates in the design of new or modified network services, advises on network design.
    • Designs and implements network architectures, including WLANs, LANs, LAN-to-LAN communications, and connections with the WAN environment.
    • Designs server, network and voice systems; installs router and switch; identifies solutions through constant interfacing with appropriate management levels, clients, department, and vendor organizations to ensure a cost-effective and efficient infrastructure environment is available to provide the processing power essential to department operations.
    • Configures, installs, and maintains necessary hardware and software for LAN/WAN/Voice hardware and software to provide a suitable environment to run production applications and to perform development; perform maintenance and release upgrades on a timely basis or as needed; monitor performance and availability of LAN/WAN/Voice platforms.
    • Installs servers, switches, networks, routers, and VoIP systems hardware; troubleshoots, maintains, upgrades, and provides solutions to complex hardware/software problems; alerts management, help desk team/Integrated Operations Center (IOC), and other IT groups when sensitive issues arise or a major problem is suspected; minimizes client productivity loss caused by technology outages, and provides necessary infrastructure for clients to meet their business needs.
    • Develops test plans (including cases for functionality, integrity, and stress testing; tests matrixes; and definition of test methodologies and test strategy); responsible for the creation of test platforms, including evaluation of test equipment and design test networks; develops automated test suites for product regression and stress testing.
  • Leads implementation and deployment efforts on intermediate projects.
    • Designs complex data networking infrastructure, interfaces and projects.
    • Works with project manager to develop realistic work estimates, financial budgets and project schedules. Reviews project deliverables for accuracy and provides assistance and mentoring to others.
    • Provides cost/benefit analysis on intermediate projects.
    • Assists in developing strategic and tactical planning of LAN/WAN environments for internal customers, including discovery and documentation of user requirements before development design and programming.
    • Participates in various IT projects intended to continually improve/upgrade the IT infrastructure, such as evaluation of new software and hardware required to meet a business need or to make a process more cost effective.
    • Proactively researches and locates the necessary tools and processes to identify troublesome trends as they develop; analyzes trends and develop a long-range plan designed to resolve problems and prevent them from recurring; maintains high service levels for the user community, and establishes a method to easily compare the installation performance against established performance objectives.
    • Participates in mid- to long-term network systems planning.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develops/follows procedures for LAN/WAN/VoIP administration (e.g., security, reliability).
    • Troubleshoots and investigates straightforward problems independently.
    • Handles times of peak service demands or as needed to solve complex problems aimed at delivering high quality network to clients within predefined service levels; reviews assigned service requests daily, following up and providing status updates to clients; ensures data pertaining to the status of service requests is entered into help desk problem tracking systems accurately and promptly on a daily basis to provide an up-to-date picture of service delivery status and backlog.
    • Recommends standards and guidelines.
    • Ensures internal and external security as well as adherence to compliance standards.
    • Participates in evaluation of vendor proposals.
    • Conducts studies and performance analysis and recommends changes.
    • Updates or creates documentation based on work performed.
  • Proficiently applies IT methods, professional knowledge and PSE standards and practices to complex tasks and situations.
    • Intuitively grasps familiar, stable system performance situations.
    • Responds to unfamiliar, undefined, unexpected, or unstable situations with the professionally prescribed standard response.
    • May function in a lead capacity within department and represent department in workflow and escalation discussions with others.
    • Effective in relationships with business partners, professional peers, and other team members.
    • Coaches less experienced IT professionals.
    • Works with IT professionals and managers, primarily within own team.
    • Operates under general direction.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 years of directly related experience in infrastructure/network environments performing network engineering (hardware and software), network designing, planning and implementing WLANs, LANs, WANs, using latest technology.
  • 3 years of experience in related planning, analysis, configuration, installation, management, and coordination work.
  • Advanced knowledge of WAN/LAN design/configuration/support, network protocols and router/switch administration.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with IT infrastructure, MPLS, data, voice, Telco, concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, routers, switches, , firewalls, domains, DNS, DHCP and subnets.
  • Advanced knowledge with Cisco IOS commands, upgrades, and is proficient with specific network routing and bridging protocols (OSPF, BGP, Multicast, QOS, Vlans, VoIP, and GET VPN).
  • Have solid knowledge of department-specific applications.
  • Solid technical knowledge and aptitude in the areas of networks, network topologies, PC workstations (configuration and connectivity), network file servers, applicable software, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to solve network server problems or network infrastructure issues and to manage the performance and capacity of a WLAN/LAN/WAN environment.
  • Ability to effectively adapt to and apply rapidly changing technology to business needs.
  • Ability to assess internal and external communication practices, anticipate future network requirements, and research and analyze emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of network provider services and understanding of LAN/WAN principles.
