Job Description

Puget Sound Energy is looking to hire early-career engineers as “Engineers in Training” (EITs) to participate in our Engineering Development Program.  This is an entry level position for those interested in pursuing a career in Engineering who have between 0-2 years of experience in engineering design, preparation of specifications, technical field work, or system studies.  These positions will be working remotely while the Work From Home policy is in place.  Office locations may include South King, Factoria, or Bothell.


As a participant in the Engineering Development Program, you will complete a series of in-depth assignments to grow knowledge and skills for a successful and rewarding career in the energy and utility industry.  Your progression through this program will be demonstrated by increasing responsibilities and opportunities to provide exceptional customer service, improve reliability of PSE’s electric and gas systems, and support adoption of emerging technologies and sustainable resources.


Your performance will be rewarded by advancement through multiple levels of engineering positions.  Your EIT experience will begin with an approximate two-year field assignment on a Customer & System Projects or Distribution System Design team.  You will learn about materials and equipment used in our electric and gas distribution systems, gain valuable experience in project management negotiate with customers and jurisdictions, and coordinate with construction teams to see your projects through to completion.  After this initial assignment, you will move into engineering positions which may include responsibility for:


• major and complex engineering designs related to electric and gas transmission
• substation design and operations
• generation plant maintenance and support
• modeling and analysis of electric and gas systems
• selecting and specifying commodities and equipment
• developing field procedures, standards and specifications to ensure PSE operates successfully in a regulated business environment
• assisting customers in managing their energy use through participation in PSE’s efficiency and renewable energy programs

Job Responsibilities

  • Supports the preparation of engineering plans, designs, specifications, standards, cost estimates, system studies, and other such evaluations.
    • Applies fundamental engineering principles and theories commonly used in engineering investigations and analysis.
    • Collects and organizes data from multiple existing and new sources.
    • Performs background research and provides simple analyses.
    • Assists more experienced staff with interpretation and analysis of data.
  • Gains an understanding of the basic functions of PSE’s engineering departments.
  • Performs field visits and gathers information to aid in the design and construction of gas, electric, and energy infrastructure.
  • Develops contacts in each department that can be utilized in the future when engineering expertise is required.
  • Supports emergency response operations when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in electrical, mechanical, civil or other appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Entry level to 2 years of experience in engineering design, preparation of specifications, technical field work, or system studies.

Desired Qualifications

  • Possession of or ability to acquire an EIT certificate
  • Work or internship experience in utility engineering or related fields
  • Knowledge of projec cost estimating or scheduling
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and analysis
  • Curriculum emphasis in power engineering (for BSEE applicants)

Candidates are encouraged to apply prior to graduating but must have a BS in an appropriate engineering discipline prior to starting.
