PSE's Planning team is looking for qualified candidates to fill an open Senior Grid Modernization Engineer position!

Job Description

A successful candidate will develop and champion new internal processes for pilot projects and technical demonstrations. This person will proactively engage with internal stakeholders to coordinate and prioritize pilots and demonstration projects, and maintain alignment with PSE’s Grid Modernization roadmap to support PSE’s 2030 strategic framework and Beyond Net Zero Carbon goals.


Our team is currently planning solutions that leverage automation, energy storage, distributed energy resources, smart meters, analysis tools and other modern grid technology to meet our evolving operational and customer needs. The successful candidate will use engineering knowledge to provide technical guidance for creating strategic plans for building, operating and maintaining a safe, reliable, resilient, smart, flexible and clean grid. 


This role is employed by the Planning department but the ideal candidate will work with cross-functional teams in IT, Operations, Engineering and/or Customer Care to gather requirements and identify business needs to inform strategic planning for smart grid technologies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops strategy and business plans for emerging technology and champions Grid Modernization pilot projects and demonstrations. 
  • Leads internal cross-functional teams to bring smart grid technology concepts to business integration and operational sustainment. May lead or coordinate the work of junior engineers, engineering assistants, field technicians, and others who assist on specific projects. (This includes contractor/consultants.)
  • Supports technology development and validation to ensure the business needs and technical scope is achieved and 
  • Identifies technical and organizational barriers of technology integration to PSE and coordinates with cross-functional teams to identify and implement solutions that meet customer and business needs.
  • Develops and delivers presentations to internal and external audiences on strategies and pilot project plans for grid modernization technologies.
  • Builds internal department consensus on analytical approaches and related critical input assumptions that will shape PSE’s grid modernization strategy and/or its implementation.
  • Evaluates new emerging technologies to ensure that solutions are aligned to industry best practices and tailored to PSE’s business environment.
  • Collaboratively builds and maintains strong relationships with internal departments and external stakeholder groups related to grid modernization.
  • Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.
  • Supports emergency response work as requested including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil or other appropriate engineering field.
  • Substantial experience in planning, design, specification preparation, technical field work, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after 8 or more years practice as a degreed engineer). Years of acquired experience is provided as a guide and alone does not constitute readiness for job level as individual’s skill acquisition rates can vary significantly.
  • Demonstrated organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Possession of or ability to acquire a Professional Engineering license.
  • Possession of MBA.
  • Experience working in the energy sector.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and utility accounting practices.
  • Experience in Project or Program Management on complex cross-functional technical projects.
  • Experience with distributed energy resource technology such as demand response, battery storage, or solar generation.
  • Experience with planning, design, or implementation of utility automation projects.
  • Experience with DMS or ADMS platforms.
