PSE's Corporate Communications team is looking for qualified candidates to fill an open Mgr Public Relations position!

Job Description

Responsible for the effective management of the communications components of key strategic company initiatives and issues. Provides input to strategic planning process. Identifies company risks, opportunities for improvement and mitigation strategies and tactics in preparing and implementing communication plans. Facilitates the effective leverage of key resources from within and outside of the department in order to attain PSE's goals. Through cross-functional collaboration and excellent team building and management, this position will play a key role in planning to pro-actively clarify and challenge expectations and assumptions about each initiative and issue.


Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

Job Responsibilities

  • Employee Safety, Development & Team Building - Provides employees with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:
    • Demonstrates a passion for safety. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety including eliminating at-risk behaviors by conducting safety audits and inspections, eliminating hazards and near misses, and attending safety meetings.
    • Sets clear expectations and holds employees accountable for performance as well as safety goals/targets where applicable.
    • Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions. Ensures required training is successfully completed.
    • Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results.
    • Accountable to ensure employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements, as well as safety standards.
    • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews and development plans.
    • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve employee, business, customer and safety results.
  • Working with the director and in collaboration with other department managers and teams across PSE, facilitates proactive media relations strategy that ensures the PSE brand is well represented and that customers and stakeholders are aware of the value PSE provides to customers and communities. Duties include strategy on message development, talking points, reactive and proactive communications plans, crisis response and more.
  • Develops executive external communications strategy. 
  • Assists in identifying, diagnosing, and solving complex organizational problems. Works confidently and diplomatically with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Oversees required customer communications and the relationship with the Customer Care Center to ensure they are included in essential communications.
  • Develops and executes communication plans, which includes: clarification of the project scope goals and strategies, development of a communications work plan including timeline, deliverables, milestones and resources (financial and human), recruits cross-functional team members, conducts team building and provides training as needed.
  • Assists in identifying, diagnosing, and solving complex organizational problems. Works confidently and diplomatically with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Provides input into the development of the department's strategic planning process and input into the evolution of PSE's communication strategies and approaches. Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.
  • Accountable for the budget and team performance.
  • Exercises full management authority, including performance reviews, pay decisions, recruitment, discipline, termination and other personnel actions.
  • Contributes towards development of annual department budget and performance goals.
  • Serves as a regular liaison to internal groups including development and preparation of communications to internal stakeholders on communications impacting PSE.
  • Performs emergency and storm duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, media, business innovation, strategic leadership/management, public relations or relevant field and 7 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Proven experience in managing complex projects with cross-functional teams and in an ever-changing and fast-paced environment
  • Proven experience in developing proactive and reactive media strategies for a range of issues. Understanding of how the media landscape is evolving.
  • Established network and media contacts and relationships.
  • Ability to contribute effectively in peer management teams
  • High level of organizational skills and attention to detail
  • High level of communication skills; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; presentation skills
  • Ability to work with conflict
  • Skills and experience in collaboration and team building
  • Professional level competencies necessary to comprehend, analyze, and influence a wide range of complex business units and corporate-wide initiatives and issues
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multiple priorities and irregular schedule commitments
  • Ability to manage projects, work with other departmental teams and deliver on commitments
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with executives and preparing executive communications for external audiences 
  • Experience working in a newsroom
  • Advanced degree in strategic leadership or management
  • Experience leading key communication initiatives outside of the utility industry
  • Broad knowledge of gas and electric utility rates, business objectives, to include operations, customer service, finance, and corporate relations
  • Understanding of utility regulatory framework
  • Public Affairs acumen/aptitude. Understanding of working with communities and civic world, and its effect on PSE projects
