Job Description

The Manager, Distributed Energy Projects leads and manages a team focused on the execution of PSE’s distributed energy resource development strategy. This position will work closely with PSE Executives, Directors and Managers to ensure strong alignment between business strategy and project execution.  This Manager will lead their team and cross-company teams to deliver close coordination and execution of the planning, vendor and technology selection, resource acquisition, engineering, project management, and construction elements of PSE’s distributed energy resource portfolio.


The Manager will also engage with other PSE departments, agencies, regulators, external stakeholders, and other related organizations to develop plans and programmatic direction. They will serve as an ambassador for PSE’s clean energy strategy with external and internal parties and engage in thought leadership, including representing PSE at industry events.


The Manager is responsible for leading, directing, supervising, and coaching a professional and operational staff and will uphold the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. They will also promotes and support a culture of total safety.

Job Responsibilities

  • Employee Safety, Development & Team Building - Provides employees with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:
    • Demonstrates a passion for safety. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety including eliminating at-risk behaviors by conducting safety audits and inspections, eliminating hazards and near misses, and attending safety meetings.
    • Sets clear expectations and holds employees accountable for performance as well as safety goals/targets where applicable.
    • Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions. Ensures required training is successfully completed.
    • Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results.
    • Accountable to ensure employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements, as well as safety standards.
    • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews and development plans.
    • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve employee, business, customer, and safety results.
  • Manages PSE’s distributed energy resource project acquisition process including procurement, analysis, and selection. 
  • Manages siting, development and construction of PSE’s distributed energy project portfolio including distributed solar systems (100 kw to 5 MW), battery energy storage systems and DCFC site development for electric vehicle public charging. 
  • Manages negotiations with distributed energy resource project developers, EPC contractors and installers.
  • Manages development of corporate strategy, timelines, and targets for distributed resource development including customer, market, business model, technology, and supply chain considerations.
  • Manages and reports on key performance indicators and targets related to distributed energy projects
  • Manages cross-functional teams to develop and implement distributed energy projects to advance PSE’s distributed resource portfolio.
  • Expected to bring a creative, forward-looking, collaborative, and analytical skill set to identifying and solving strategic issues for the company.
  • Manages internal staff, consultants, and budget.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on distributed energy resources to PSE’s state and federal, and local legislative and community activities and thought leadership in regional utility and sustainability stakeholder settings.
  • Coordinates with local and national stakeholders, including other utilities, energy and sustainability organizations, Washington State utility commission staff, municipalities, customers and advisory groups.
  • Promotes PSE’s distributed energy resource and clean energy strategy in internal and external settings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, economics, public policy, law, business administration or other related field of expertise (appropriate additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree).
  • 7 years of increasing responsibility in the utility or energy sector (appropriate related experience or education may be considered in lieu of direct utility or energy experience).
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills to effectively and efficiently analyze a wide array of potential business scenarios.
  • Proven experience in developing solutions to complex and novel business problems considering views of different actors/stakeholders and leveraging data.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop and cultivate strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, regulators and other industry participants.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to contemporaneously incorporate public feedback or stakeholder negotiation points.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage complex projects.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite of word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in relevant field.
  • Experience with renewable energy or distributed energy resource planning and procurement.
  • Experience managing or working on development and project management of distributed energy resource, renewable energy projects or electric vehicle charging stations.
  • Experience negotiating and implementing commercial contracts for project development and construction. 
  • Project management certification.
  • Experience with utility regulation or energy policy.
  • Experience in product development.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and collaborate with highly technical teams and individuals.
