Pathway to Apprenticeship

PSE's Pathway to Apprenticeship (PTA) is a paid, full-time career opportunity where you earn competitive wages and benefits from day one—no tuition or training costs required. We invest in your future through structured training that develops the skills you need to work safely and meet all state and federal requirements.

PTA positions are entry-level roles that provide a direct pathway to our comprehensive Apprenticeship Programs in: Substation Wire, Hydro Electrician, Hydro Mechanic, Electric Meter and Combustion Turbine Specialist. PTA openings may occur at any time. Candidates are drawn from the Qualified Candidate Pool (QCP) to interview for open positions according to their pool ranking.

Who this is for:

  • Drawn to physical, hands-on work rather than an office environment
  • Eager to learn hands-on skills from experienced professionals
  • Able to work outdoors, at heights, in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions
  • Flexible with classroom instruction and completing coursework outside of working hours

The test will account for 20% and the interview will account for 80% of the total score. Candidates will be placed in a Ranked Pool of Qualified Candidates based on their combined scores.

Pathway to Apprenticeship (PTA) openings may occur at any time. Qualified candidates are drawn from the pool to interview for these positions according to their pool ranking. Candidates will remain in the pool for up to two years from the date of their NJATC Aptitude Test.

Pathway to Apprenticeship – Electric Meter

You will work on the devices that measure how much electricity homes and business use. This isn't just a job – it's a position at the heart of the energy transition. Every meter you install, every system you commission, and every problem you solve contributes to a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable electrical grid.

If you're ready for a career that combines technical sophistication with real-world impact, where your expertise grows more valuable with each passing year, and where you can literally age out doing work you love – the Meter Apprenticeship is calling.

Pathway to Apprenticeship – Combustion Turbine (CT)

You will help run big power plants that use gas turbines to create electricity. The technical complexity and variety of combustion turbine operations make this an intellectually stimulating career for those who thrive on problem-solving and continuous learning. Whether you're conducting daily monitoring inspections or operating simple cycle or combined cycle plants with steam and gas systems, every shift brings variety and technical challenges.

The small crew environment means your contributions are immediately visible and valued, while the technical complexity ensures that dedicated learners can continuously advance their expertise and earning potential.

Pathway to Apprenticeship – Substation Wire

You build and maintain the equipment that moves electricity from power plants to neighborhoods. This isn't just construction; it's craftsmanship where every connection you make is your signature, and every project you complete keeps the lights on for thousands of people.

Substation wire apprentices become the ultimate problem- solvers. You'll use every tool imaginable—from digging ditches to operating high voltage equipment, from troubleshooting complex electrical systems to building control panels. When equipment breaks down and the manuals are outdated, you're the one who takes it apart and figures it out. Substation wire doesn't just replace—it FIXES.

Pathway to Apprenticeship – Hydro Power

You maintain dams and equipment that turn moving water into electricity. The Hydro Apprenticeship offers something truly unique in the trades—a career that combines cutting-edge technology with some of the most scenic work environments imaginable.

Every day it operates like a well-managed farm, with scheduled maintenance tasks and unexpected repairs that demand exacting standards. You'll develop specialized skills in precision machinery, hydraulic systems, and power generation that make you invaluable in a field where demand is constant. This apprenticeship combines technical mastery with natural beauty and the satisfaction of working with clean, renewable energy!
