Job Description

Puget Sound Energy is on a journey to deliver on our clean energy goals with the first major milestone occurring by 2030.  In order to support a decarbonized energy system, PSE is seeking a Director of Data Services to join our team.  This role will support this journey by taking the foundation and elevating it to allow PSE to make data driven decisions through analytics and AI.


The Director Data Services owns the vision, roadmap, strategy, and execution of data, analytics/BI, and AI capabilities throughout the company.  This includes overseeing data management, data architecture, data governance, data quality, KPIs, and driving business enablement on an enterprise-wide level. This role is a strategic leader and subject matter expert to ensure that data and AI play a crucial role in achieving the company's goals within a compliant framework. To do so, they must effectively communicate the strategy and plan to all levels of the organization, including executives. 
 
As the head of the IT Data Services team, this individual is accountable for the overall performance of the team and reports to the CIO.  They manage a team of data architects, data engineers, and analysts, leveraging data as a cross-functional strategic asset to lead initiatives and provide valuable insights to stakeholders. They understand the unique needs of each area and foster a collaborative, world-class data organization that empowers stakeholders with a deeper understanding of their data, including trends and insights that drive business growth.  
 
In addition to their data-related responsibilities, they uphold safety compliance standards and promote a culture of total safety within the company. They also demonstrate a commitment to conducting business honestly, ethically, and in alignment with the company's core values and Code of Conduct. They ensure that all duties are performed in accordance with regulatory compliance obligations.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Employee Safety, Development & Team Building - Providing employees with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:
    • Demonstrates a passion for safety. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety including eliminating at-risk behaviors by conducting safety audits and inspections, eliminating hazards and near misses, and attending safety meetings.
    • Sets clear expectations and holds employees accountable for performance as well as safety goals/targets where applicable.
    • Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions. Ensures required training is successfully completed.
    • Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results. 
    • Accountable to ensure employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements, as well as safety standards. 
    • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews and development plans.
    • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve employee, business, customer and safety results.
  • Establishes data policies, standards, organization, and enforcement of data and enterprise information management concepts. 
  • Oversees and reports on data metrics, and has director-level responsibility for all enterprise information/data management budgeting and initiatives.
  • Implements policies, standards, structures, procedures, roles and responsibilities to govern data.  
  • Establishes rules of engagement, decision rights, and accountabilities for the effective management of information assets.
  • Maximizes data quality and data maturity for the enterprise, and continuously monitors and improves data quality.
  • Establishes the strategy and architecture for integrated decision support applications, tools, and databases to provide the business with easy access to business data.
  • Develops data warehouse strategy to provide consistent, clean and integrated data.
  • Works to build business performance data management systems and dashboard to provide timely information and insights that enable improved business decisions and optimized processes.
  • Drives a data culture by creating visibility into the business value that data can generate for the organization. Identifies and communicates opportunities to drive business value.
  • Promotes self-service of data access and analysis, and implements data literacy programs to educate the business on data concepts, standards, and tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • 10 years of relevant IT experience, including demonstrated success working as a member of a team in a senior leadership role.  
  • Management experience leading a team of Data Engineers, Data Architects, and Data Analysts.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to drive change and maturity across a broad, complex organization, up to and including board levels.  
  • Demonstrated project management skills and exceptional ability to set and manage expectations while working effectively with others.
  • Proven experience demonstrating extremely high productivity with quality results. 
  • Ability to operate at an enterprise level, using creative and innovative solutions with a relentless focus on customer experience. 
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to model and create an environment of accountability for outcome-based objectives. 
  • Self-starter with record of accomplishment seamlessly executing quickly on complex projects with minimal guidance.
  • Excellent relationship-building, communication, and negotiation skills. 
  • Ability to accomplish results using influence instead of authority.
     

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Electric and/or gas utility experience.
  • Experience in a regulated industry.

The pay range for this position is $162,300.00 - $347,200.00, and this position is eligible for annual goals based incentive bonuses.
