Job Description

Puget Sound Energy is looking for a Manager of Infrastructure Security to lead our team.


The Manager of Infrastructure Security is a part of PSE’s IT Infrastructure team which is responsible for the design, and support of the infrastructure security technologies. 


The Manager of Infrastructure Security will lead a team that is developing and maintaining security and identity solutions and strategies for PSE.  As the technology changes the ideal candidate will lead this team to thinking outside of the box on how they can better collaborate with other departments within IT and to develop a team that thinks horizontally as well as vertically across technology domains.


We are looking for someone with the experience and background to bring the Infrastructure Security team into a service oriented mindset.  The ideal candidate will have experience in developing forwarding thinking teams with a customer service mindset and leading a team to develop solutions and processes that support our aggressive availability goals.

Job Responsibilities

  • Employee Safety, Development & Team Building - Provides employees with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and builds effective teams:
    • Demonstrates a passion for safety. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety including eliminating at-risk behaviors by conducting safety audits and inspections, eliminating hazards and near misses, and attending safety meetings. No preference which category it goes in, but probably only need to say it once.
    • Sets clear expectations and holds employees accountable for performance as well as goals/targets where applicable.
    • Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions. Ensures required training is successfully completed.
    • Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results. Accountable to ensure employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements, as well as safety standards.
    • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance review.
    • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve employee, business, customer and safety results.
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of work on basis of meeting established objectives and work methods. Holds employees accountable for meeting assigned objectives in accordance with expected timelines and budgets.
  • Participates in development of 0-24 month strategic plans for assigned IT segment or area.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of the IT discipline. Cultivates, disseminates and enforces policies, procedures and standards for the team.
  • Works closely with customers and colleagues to identify and maximize opportunities to use technology to improve business processes and support critical business strategies, and promote the strategic use of standard and new technologies.
  • Continually reviews current IT responsibilities against corporate needs to identify areas where technology can resolve current business problems by the evaluation, integration, implementation and support of such technology and by providing and maintaining a documented set of technology standards (hardware and software) for corporate use within a discrete area of responsibility and one or more technology domains.
  • Assesses customer requirements, evaluates possible solutions and presents recommendations to upper management and/or business customers.
  • Advises on selection of technology purchases for new or standard approved technologies within a technical domain.
  • Leverages technical domain knowledge and applies critical thinking to address problems of systems integration and compatibility for discrete areas.
  • Develops and maintains key vendor relationships associated with assigned IT segment or area to ensure service level agreement and deliverables are met.
  • Keeps pace with current technologies and best practices related to assigned IT segment or area, and encourages team development in this area.
  • Establishes annual budget for assigned IT segment or area, monitors actual against budget, and provides analysis and recommendations to adjust to business changes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Fosters and maintains good relationships with customers to ensure processes are integrated to support expected customer service levels.
  • Provides direction/support to Project Managers and integrates activities with other IT departments to ensure successful implementations, project goals, and issue resolutions are met.
  • Identifies and implements metrics and KPIs relating to team performance, operational performance, resource utilization, and continuous process improvement.
  • Leads process of setting service level targets for assigned IT segment or area, and coordinates with peers to influence those targets. Monitors service levels to ensure performance against targets.
  • Partners with other IT areas, at various levels, to accomplish goals and coordinate cross-team work activities and resource needs
  • Ensures that application systems and/or infrastructure platforms are developed/deployed/customized in a way that is in compliance with PSE architectural standards and established methodologies and practices.
  • May function as the highest technical authority in a team or across multiple teams, therefore will occasionally be involved in individual contributor activities in resolving the most complicated technical issues.
  • May oversee purchasing activities for assigned IT segment or area.
  • Participates in developing strategy for optimizing the use of technology. Sets direction for the creation of technical, functional and support procedures for systems, unique configurations and supporting documentation.
  • Responsible for end-to-end system management including design, analysis, development and maintenance of systems and services for a technology domain, service or business unit.
  • May assume primary responsibility for management of consultants with a relationship to technology area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
  • Proven knowledge of information technologies and methodologies related to assigned IT segment or area.
  • 7 years experience managing or leading teams (some could include consulting) in strategic planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of IT system, application, infrastructure service or other technology areas. With experience in management demonstrating:
    • Strategic thinking and leadership with strong abilities in relationship management.
    • High competency in project management discipline and execution of small to large projects.
    • Experience in leading multidisciplinary, high-performance work teams/groups.
    • Successful development and implementation of new technologies.
    • Proficiency in driving process improvement.
    • Demonstrated competency in developing efficient and effective solutions to diverse and complex problems.
  • 2 years experience participating in strategic planning, development, implementation, and maintenance/support of assigned IT segment or area.
  • Demonstrated management and decision making skills concerning information systems policies, processes and procedures with proven track record of completing tasks and/or projects within budget and on schedule.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of business processes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, especially with non-technical managers. Solid oral and written communications skills. An ability to present and discuss technical information in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others, and gains understanding.
  • Strong knowledge in project management discipline to effectively arrange resources and manage multiple small to large projects in a cross-functional environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills for single of multiple technical areas.
  • Strong negotiating and critical thinking skills.
  • Customer-oriented, a positive, team-oriented attitude, flexibility, an understanding of the business issues driving the need for information technology, and solid work ethic are expected.

Desired Qualifications

  • Comprehensive understanding of security and identity technologies
  • Experience with Palo Alto, f5, and Okta products and solutions.
  • Experience in office and data center build-out of security solutions.
  • A strong background in IT infrastructure and technology deployment.
  • Highly desirable certifications for this position include: Certified Network Professional (CNP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
