Job Description

Puget Sound Energy’s Asset Management Department is looking for a senior engineer to join our team.  This roles of a Transmission & Distribution Asset Strategy Planning Engineer will focus on developing and maintaining holistic strategies to impact the asset lifecycle, reliability, resiliency and grid modernization of the electric system. This will require big picture thinking, ability to perform in-depth analysis, and lead teams to come to collaborative solutions. This will involve the Distribution and Transmission Systems and will require technical knowledge of both realms and ability to network/collaborate with the other departments involved in these layers of the electric system to effectively bring value to PSE’s customers.

We are looking for someone that is highly motivated, willing to take on new challenges, be innovative, and has demonstrated experience improving complex processes and procedures, developing strategic plans or programs, and working with various teams within a utility.

This position will uphold the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities, and promote and support a culture of total safety.
This position may be subject to random DOT drug and/or alcohol testing.

Job Responsibilities
  • Advocate for the big picture lifecycle thinking of electric system equipment
  • Support applicable NERC/WECC compliance requirements
  • Contribute and support the creation of Asset Management strategies, plans and metrics as it relates to the Distribution and Transmission Systems.
  • Assess the equipment Reliability and Performance Needs from an asset management perspective
    • Complete big picture outage reviews to diagnose causes for outages
    • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project management to assess the interdependent needs
    • Data analysis and determine estimated failure rates and aging  infrastructure
    • Collect and analyze equipment health data for lifecycle evaluation
    • Identifies potential areas of weakness with existing work, and initiate corrective action
  • Strategy Development and Business Improvement
    • Prepares complex solutions through developing/impacting designs, standards, studies and analyses 
    • Develop new strategies and tactics to improve equipment reliability
    • Build processes to optimize the efforts of reliability improvements 
    • Interprets and/or modifies available guidelines for application to existing problems or processes 
    • Independently prepares cost estimates and financial projections to indicate long-term impacts
    • Develop strategies and business justifications for programs
    • Evaluate, consider, and integrate new technology where it is a fitting solution
  • Manage existing strategies and support the Implementation team as needed
    • T&D Pole Program
    • Cable Remediation program
    • Plans and develops 5yr budgets with appropriate documentation
  • Documents and shares work with others to strengthen the depth and breadth of skills within PSE’s engineering workforce.
  • May lead or coordinate the work of junior engineers, engineering assistants, field technicians, and others who assist on specific projects. (This includes contractor/consultants.)
  • Advocate of data managements and effective use for data visualizations
  • Supports emergency response work as requested including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or other appropriate engineering field
  • Substantial experience in planning, design, specification preparation, maintenance, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after 8 years’ practice as a degreed engineer).
  • Demonstrated organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Desired Qualifications

•    Possession of or ability to acquire a Professional Engineering license
•    Familiarity with the Asset Management framework (ISO55000)
•    Demonstrated leadership skills in positively influencing teams and technical decisions
•    Experience working on the distribution and transmission elements of the electric system
•    Knowledge of engineering economics and analysis
•    Experience working on complex engineering projects
•    Strategy development experience
•    Experience working with both internal and external customers on projects

•    A natural curiosity to know the ‘why’ and to continue to learn
•    Knowledge of engineering economics and analysis
•    Familiarity with the following programs: Microsoft office products, SAP, EMS, PI historian, Power BI, VBA, Access Databases, PowerPlant
•    Leadership ability
•    Self-motivation and ability to navigate ambiguity
•    Strong communication skills in working with management, engineers, project managers, and operations 
•    Strong computer application skill set, with an aptitude for data analysis and data visualization
