Job Description

Puget Sound Energy’s Clean Energy Strategy team is looking for a Communications Initiative Consultant to join our team.  This person will play a key role in helping PSE deliver a more equitable and sustainable clean energy future for our region. They will primarily be responsible for supporting PSE’s Equity Advisory Group, including managing the schedule, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and engaging directly with advisory group members, and customers. The ideal candidate will identify cross-initiative opportunities for improvement and potential risk areas, and utilize mitigation techniques. Through cross-functional collaboration and excellent team building and management, this position will be a key initiative team member and pro-actively clarify and challenge expectations and assumptions about each initiative and issue reflecting the customer and/or employee perspective.

Job Responsibilities

  • Leads the communications, public engagement, and/or outreach component of company projects, strategic initiatives and issues, providing support to other initiative teams as needed. This includes development and implementation of work plans, materials development and team coordination, and project management.
  • Identifies and prioritizes equitable engagement strategies and techniques in alignment with PSE’s commitment to an equitable clean energy transition.
  • Coordinates, tracks, and reports on cross-functional engagement and outreach activities.
  • Identifies and prioritizes communications, outreach and reputation risks and develops the risk management and mitigation plan that addresses each risk in a timely and efficient manner. This requires close coordination, partnership and communication with multiple departments.
  • Provides input into the development of the department's strategic planning process and input into the evolution of PSE's communication strategies and approaches, including new media technology, engagement strategies and processes.
  • Provides support to other Communications teams as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

For internal communications work, this includes such things as:

  • Working with internal partners to identify their internal communications goals and define the strategy for achieving the goals.
  • Working with other internal communications team members as well as other departments to implement the internal communications plans to inform and engage our employees.

 

For project work, this includes such things as:

  • Engaging directly with customers and advisory groups – including PSE’s Equity Advisory Group – answering questions and acting as a liaison between the customer and project teams.
  • Coordinating with internal groups to ensure information is being shared to customer-facing employees and cohesive public outreach strategies and plans are developed.
  • Acting as a customer advocate. Raising issues on the customers’ behalf, and working with the Project Managers to address customer concerns.
  • Assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of the project plans. 
  • Periodic travel to events and meetings throughout PSE’s service territory.
  • Planning and participation in some evening and weekend activities such as stakeholder meetings and local events.

 

For marketing work, this includes:

  • Aligning program goals, objectives and strategies with customer needs, priorities and desired outcomes, as documented through PSE-driven customer research efforts.
  • Contributing to planning and execution of customer research efforts including: identifying key research questions, reviewing data collection instruments and reports, and participating in research finding presentations.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, media, business innovation, marketing, strategic leadership/management or related field, and 7 years relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience in managing increasingly complex projects with cross-functional teams and in an ever-changing and fast-paced environment.
  • Professional level competencies necessary to comprehend, analyze, and influence a wide range of complex business units, initiatives and issues.
  • Ability to contribute effectively in peer management teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skills and experience in collaboration and team building.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multiple priorities and irregular schedule commitments.
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in strategic leadership or management.
  • Excellent understanding of and experience implementing equitable stakeholder engagement practices and techniques.
  • International Association for Public Participation (IAP2), or similar, training or experience.
  • Ability to work successfully with external stakeholders and communities representing diverse interests.
  • Practical and successful application of community and/or customer engagement strategies and tactics including the use of new media applications.
  • Understanding of the techniques and processes needed to create a consistent and common voice across communications.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external constituents, utilize creative thinking and problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Proven experience developing engagement plans/strategies and utilizing findings to inform and improve communications engagement goals, strategies and tactics.
  • Experience in leading communications strategies and delivering on the plans.
  • LEAN certification, Project Management certification or Six Sigma certification.
  • Broad knowledge of gas and electric utility rates, business objectives, to include operations, customer service, finance, and corporate relations.

The pay range for this position is $85,000.00 - $141,500.00, and this position is eligible for annual goals based incentive bonuses.
